In the American style fighting comprises of hitting with the feet and fists and attacks must be above the hip. Opponents must not use knees and elbows, and attacks on the shins are not allowed. There are up to ten to twelve rounds, with each round being between 2 to 3 minutes.

There are 5 rounds each in the European rounds, each one being 3 minutes long. Knees and thighs can be used at the time of these attacks. Kicking below the belt is also allowed but not into the crotch area. Pushing and headbutting is not permitted.
